Diploma Project
The Land Above

In Château-d’OEx, as in many other Swiss resorts, the cable car in the middle of the village has been at a standstill for several years. The increasingly frequent lack of snow is forcing some mid-range mountain facilities to close their doors and shut down their machines, as tourists are no longer visiting them. So, what is to be done with these abandoned structures in the landscape in the decades to come?

The project, in the form of an anticipation story, proposes a new way of living. The mountain, as a refuge from the global warming already underway, offers the advantage of altitude and vertical drops. By transforming the site’s three buildings, located at different altitudes, into one big machine for living (on) and adapting, they learn how to organize themselves around the cable car as the only means of transport. Drawing on the region’s ancient customs, they live in harmony with the rhythm of the mountain. They inhabit the cable car, worship it, and watch over it as their savior.
